Spring Potholes in Bordentown Are No Match for the Chevrolet Cruze

Even with a mild winter in Bordentown, potholes are a rite of spring. But it is simulated cracks and craters in the pavement developed by General Motors’ engineers that help develop the ride quality of vehicles like the global Chevrolet Cruze compact sedan, available at Bob Maguire Chevrolet.

The buildup of moisture in the small holes and cracks in the road during the winter months alternates between freezing and thawing as temperatures fall and rise, causing expansion and contraction of the road surface. The result can be significant breaks in the pavement under the weight of normal vehicle traffic.

The potholes at GM’s Milford Proving Ground don’t look like the ones drivers encounter on daily commutes. These are specially designed, fabricated in metal and planted into the ground with concrete surface around them.  The downslope and the ramp up in these engineered potholes vary to simulate severity of road damage and recreate varied load conditions that occur in a vehicle when it is driven through one.

The designer potholes allow for controlled, repetitive testing, necessary to assess durability and help determine the fine tuning that contributes to a comfortable ride.

“With spring sunshine, comes potholes, which can be a drivers worst enemy,” said Michael Maguire, President of Bob Maguire Chevrolet. “Chevy has gone above and beyond with testing of the Cruze, and we’re more than confident drivers in the area will be satisfied with the vehicle.”

The Cruze, which has sold more than 1.13 million units in more than 100 markets around the world since its launch in late 2009, underwent extensive road testing around the world to ensure consistent ride quality and comfort from Korea to Bordentown  and points between.

“We’ve got a wide variety of road surfaces that simulate real-world road conditions around the globe,” says Frank Barhorst, who supervises the Product Usage Measurements and Applications group in Milford.  “The range of road surfaces that we test on goes from good to bad, in order to find the most-balanced condition for each vehicle we develop.”

“For durability, we might want roads with potholes or twist events. For noise, it could be chatter bumps on a dirt road, or concrete that is getting old and bald. Then there are considerations such as loose gravel for handling,” said Barhorst.

The Cruze is Chevrolet’s best-selling nameplate and helped the brand sell more passenger cars than any automaker in the United States in 2011.

2012 Chevy Sonic: Have Fun, Be Safe

Have fun, be safe: how many times have you heard that advice before a road trip? In a Chevy Sonic, we consider those words to drive by.

2012 Chevy Sonic: Have Fun, Be Safe

2012 Chevy Sonic: Have Fun, Be Safe

Most people know Sonic as the most fun-to-drive car and offers an EPA estimated 40 MPG highway1. But did you know Sonic was also designed to exceed expectations in terms of segment-leading safety features? The proof is in the rating.

The 2012 Sonic is the first and only vehicle in its class to receive a 5-star Overall Vehicle Score for Safety from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)2. Both sedan and hatchback were tested and both scored 5-stars—the highest rating possible. The score is formulated based on results from frontal and side crash tests in addition to rollover resistance testing.

Starting with 2011 models, NHTSA introduced tougher tests and more rigorous requirements for its 5-star ratings. Safety feature performance and crash-avoidance technologies like 10-standard air bags3, Rollover Mitigation, StabiliTrak Electronic Stability Control and OnStar with Automatic Crash Response4 were just some of the reasons this subcompact achieved such a high mark.

From the largest Chevy vehicles in our lineup to the smallest, concern for our passenger’s safety is always a top priority. And in a 2012 Sonic you can have fun…and be safe!

Chevy Trophies – Bob Maguire Chevrolet

Yes, we have a case of the blues. And we couldn’t be happier. Why? The 2012 Kelley Blue Book Best Resale Value Awards were just announced.

When people are in the market for a new vehicle, high resale value is often a major consideration. After all, depreciation is a new car owner’s biggest expense and choosing a vehicle with better resale value will leave you money ahead at trade-in time.

If this is something you consider, consider this: Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com just recognized Chevy’s outstanding achievements in producing vehicles that best retain their value over the first five years of new-vehicle ownership with their Best Resale Value Awards1. And the winners are:

  • 2012 Camaro V6 (Sports Car)
  • 2012 Camaro SS (High-Performance Car)
  • 2012 Traverse (Full-Size Utility Vehicle)
  • 2012 Volt (Electric Car)
  • 2012 Camaro (Top 10 Overall)

As you can see Camaro, in any form, is a high performance sports machine offering a great dollar-to-horsepower ratio during its first five years on the road. Traverse’s superb combination of comfort, capability and eight-passenger seating2 adds up to an incredible residual value rating and the best full-size utility vehicle winner. The eco-friendly Volt takes the electric car category thanks in part to its Voltec propulsion system, a unique technology combining an electric motor with an internal-combustion engine/generator. This innovation allows for driving on electricity only or using both electricity and gas.

Stop by Bob Maguire Chevrolet today and check out our Kelley Blue Book kbb.com Best Resale Value Award winners. Your wallet will thank you come trade-in time.

The Color Red

You’re going to see a lot of red this month, and while red is the color of passionate love, people spread a lot of rumors about red cars and their drivers.

The conventional wisdom about what happens to red cars out on the road is almost all myth, urban legend or just plain dumb.

Myth #1 — Red cars get pulled over more often by the police. According to snopes.com, there is no evidence for police targeting red cars any more than other cars. One unscientific investigation by a St. Petersburg, FL reporter found that grey cars get pulled over more and white cars get pulled over less often.

Myth #2 — Red cars get in more accidents than other cars. There is no evidence that red cars are disproportionately more likely to be in crashes, and a AAA study states “any study that reports red cars are more prone to crashes needs to rule out higher number of red cars on the road and disproportionate numbers of bad drivers (e.g. young males) owning red cars.” In fact, Swedish researchers claim that black cars are more likely to be in accidents because they are harder to see and that pink cars had the fewest accidents. White cars were also under-represented in accidents.

Myth #3 — Red cars have higher insurance premiums. No insurance company has ever charged red car owners more for their insurance. It just doesn’t happen. Most insurance companies don’t even ask what color your car is.

So the next time you’re in the market for a new vehicle or even if you’re considering a new paint job, don’t be afraid of choosing red and letting your passion show.
