Overview

The Tahoe and Suburban are Chevrolet’s full-size SUVs. The Suburban is essentially the Tahoe’s longer-wheelbase bigger brother. Both the Tahoe and Suburban are offered in LS, LT and LTZ models, while the Tahoe Hybrid comes in a single trim. Each of these models is available with a choice of rear- or 4-wheel drive. The Tahoe and Suburban both offer a standard 320-horsepower, 5.3L V8 engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The heavy-duty Suburban 2500 also offers a 6.0L V8 that makes 352 hp and 382 pound-feet of torque. The Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid employs GM’s 2-mode hybrid system which combines a Vortec 6.0L V8 engine with Active Fuel Management and a sophisticated Electrically Variable Transmission (EVT) system that employs two electric motors that engage to help power the truck for optimal efficiency. Chevrolet to Put Environmental Impact Stickers on All of Their Cars by 2013

In an unprecedented move in the automotive industry, Chevrolet is about to wear its green heart on its sleeve by putting environmental impact labels on all of its vehicles starting with the 2012 Chevy Sonic and continuing through their full line of 2013 models. The new Ecologic labels will provide information for customers on the vehicles’ green features – including their environmental impact related to emissions from manufacturing facilities, waste reduction, fuel-saving technologies, and use of alternative energy sources. In order to make sure the stickers are true to the reality of Chevy’s green initiatives they are having them audited by the third party company Two Tomorrows.

“Customers want companies to be honest and transparent about their environmental efforts and sustainability goals, and rightly so,” said General Motors North America President Mark Reuss. “Putting an Ecologic label on each Chevrolet is just one more way for us to share our environmental progress.” Though the Ecologic program will be introduced on 2013 models, those models will be on the showroom floor before the end of 2012 with stickers ablaze on the rear windows for all vehicle shoppers to see. The stickers will have three eco-sections, one called Before the Road covering manufacturing and development, one called On the Road about how green the vehicle is when it is in your hands and one called After the Road about the possibilities of recycling and reuse of the car and its parts after it leaves your hands — apparently 85% of their weight is completely recyclable.

Changes

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 full-size pickup receives few notable changes for 2012. Several small styling tweaks have been made, including a new split grille and a new aerodynamic front bumper for LS and LT models without tow hooks. Two new trim packages are available: White Diamonds and Custom Sport Truck. New 20-inch chrome wheels are also available.

 

Value

Full-size trucks are used in such a wide range of situations-from construction fleets to long-distance driving-and the two different interiors offered in the Silverado and the nearly identical GMC Sierra help satisfy shoppers better than most other competing models. LS and LT models are probably the best fit for buyers who need the sturdy, get-messy capability of a pickup at least some of the time, but the LTZ is the choice for those who need a pickup that doesn’t compromise luxury. And for those who need a pickup but want to make a greener choice, with even lower operating costs, the Silverado Hybrid has 25% better fuel economy without sacrificing much towing or hauling ability.

 

Overview

Chevrolet continues to offer two completely different interiors for its Silverado 1500 family of pickups: Work Truck, LS and LT trims get a so-called “pure pickup interior” that includes larger door handles and controls that are designed to be used with gloves on, while the LTZ trim gets a luxurious, softer and car-like interior. The LTZ instrument panel is a bit lower to afford a better outward view, and several special color and trim themes are offered with the LTZ exclusively. LTZ models boast many more exclusive features in addition to the instrument panel; different door panels, a divided center console, heated power leather front seats and an upgraded Bose sound system are included, while the top crew cab LTZ models get a rear-seat audio system, larger glovebox and rain-sensing wipers. In most Silverado 1500 models, a stadium-style back seat is split 60/40, including a folding center armrest and can be folded forward easily. The extended-cab versions have enough legroom for occasional use and access is aided by 170-degree back doors. Regular cab, crew cab and extended cab versions of the Silverado are available, while cargo bed lengths are 5′ 8″ for the short bed, 6′ 6″ for the standard bed, or 8 feet for the long bed. The maximum payload rating runs as high as 1,909 pounds. Across most of the model line, the Silverado has a very good ride and handles well compared to the full-size trucks of the past, with a well-tuned coil-over-shock front suspension, Hotchkiss-type rear suspension and rack-and-pinion steering. Actually, five different suspension packages are offered, each tuned for particular types of use: Z83 is for a smooth ride; Z85 is oriented for better handling and trailer towing; Z71 yields better off-road capability; Z60 is for top street performance; and NHT is for top towing capacity. Towing numbers range up to 10,700 pounds when configured with the extended cab, 6.0L engine and Enhanced Trailering Package. The 2012 Silverado offers four different engines–a 195-horsepower, 4.3L V6, a 302-hp, 4.8L V8, a 315-hp, 5.3L V8 and a 403-hp, 6.2L V8. The V6 comes with a 4-speed automatic, while all others get a 6-speed automatic. Fuel economy ratings are as high was 22 mpg on the highway. The Silverado Hybrid is a good option for green shoppers who still need pickup capability. The 2-mode hybrid system incorporates a 6.0L gasoline V8, electric motor system, variable automatic transmission and nickel-metal hydride battery pack, all of which enable a 6,100-pound tow rating while allowing especially good fuel economy in city driving, with EPA ratings of 21 mpg city, 22 highway. Top options on the Silverado include Bluetooth phone connectivity, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system and a navigation system with XM Nav Traffic, plus a rearview camera system that aids visibility while parking this tall vehicle. For 2012, the Chevrolet Impala gets several notable updates. Last year’s standard 3.5L V6 and optional 3.9L V6 have been replaced by a new direct-injected 3.6L V6, which uses variable valve timing and makes 302 horsepower. It’s linked to a new 6-speed automatic transmission. In addition, a new grille has been added, along with new fog lamps, and dual exhaust tips are now standard across the line. The interior features new woodgrain trim and a new leather shift knob and new 16-inch wheels are available. Value

The Chevrolet Impala is a favorite with fleets, offering a roomy, conservative sedan design that’s been kept updated with modern features and options. For interior space it’s still one of the best vehicles in its class, with room in back for three adults and a front bench seat available. Chevrolet also claims that the Impala is unique in its segment with the ability to fold the backseat forward for large items. Ride comfort and overall quietness are also strengths. The Impala offers a lot of features for the money.

With a rather conventional MacPherson strut-type front suspension and trailing-arm rear suspension, with a stabilizer bar in back, the Impala is tuned to bring a smooth ride yet handle reasonably responsively. The body and suspension systems were designed to include some significant sound-deadening measures, which make the Impala quiet on the highway and over coarse surfaces. Depending on the trim level, the Impala comes with either a front bench seat or two individual buckets. In back, there’s enough room for three adults across, and the seatbacks fold forward for a full pass-through to the trunk for larger cargo items. There’s a storage tub under the rear cushions. And a sunroof is available. Side and side-curtain airbags are standard on all Impalas, along with GM’s StabiliTrak stability control system and 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes. There are LATCH child-seat connectors in all three rear seating positions. Even the base LS model includes keyless entry, cruise control, power windows and locks and air conditioning. LT models get larger machined aluminum wheels, a remote start system, dual-zone climate control and Bluetooth hands-free. At the top of the range, the LTZ comes equipped as a more sophisticated, somewhat sporty sedan, with upgraded wheels and W-rated tires, heated seats, heated mirrors, a universal remote, and Bose audio. All sound systems include an auxiliary input. The available remote-start system in the Impala is claimed to work up to 200 feet away, and will pre-heat or cool the vehicle. Also included in the Impala is the latest Gen 9.0 version of OnStar, with improved voice recognition, along with Direction and Connections services and Turn-by-Turn navigation, which allows you to beam route guidance from a call center into the vehicle.

Following its introduction in 2011, the Cruze continues largely unchanged for 2012. Several new colors are available, and a touchscreen navigation system has been added. In addition, push-button start with keyless entry is now available. Mileage ratings have been improved for 2012 as well, with the Cruze LT and LTZ now rated at 38 mpg highway.

Cabin noise is mostly absent, thanks to triple-seal doors, a laminated windshield, and hydraulic engine mounts. Overview

For 2012, Chevrolet’s Cruze gets only minor updates. The Cruze shares its attractive styling cues with other Chevy offerings, notably the Malibu. The distinctive split front grille is found on other new cars in the company portfolio. Available only as a 4-door sedan, the Cruze comes in four trim levels: LS, Eco, LT and LTZ. The LS is powered by a 1.8L 4-cylinder engine with variable valve timing, which produces 136 hp at 6,300 rpm. The unit is mated to standard 6-speed manual transmission, though a 6-speed automatic is available. Cars outfitted in LT, Eco or LTZ trim utilize a 138-hp turbocharged 4-cylinder, paired with the 6-speed automatic. The direct-injection engine delivers 148 ft-lb of torque at 1,850 rpm, and Chevrolet says it can deliver 38 mpg on the highway. The Eco version is similar to the LT, but with more aerodynamic body panels to help increase fuel economy. It also features low rolling resistance tires, lightweight wheels, and a smaller fuel tank. It’s rated at 42 mpg highway.

The LS is very much an economy model, and standard features include steel wheels, manual mirrors, an AM/FM/CD 6-speaker stereo with MP3 playback and an auxiliary jack, XM satellite radio, cloth seating and a 60/40 split-fold rear seat. Air conditioning, power locks and windows and remote keyless entry are all standard on the LS as well. The LT is split into two sub-trims: 1LT and 2LT. In addition to the turbo engine and auto gearbox, 16-inch steel wheels come standard, as do silver interior accents, remote start, a leather-clad steering wheel and power mirrors. Stepping up to the LTZ adds niceties like a rear parking aid, power-adjustable driver’s seat, leather seating, cruise control, Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, electrochromic rearview mirror, heated side mirrors, climate control, a sport suspension, alloy wheels and performance tires. Available options for the Cruze include touchscreen navigation with a 40-gigabyte hard drive, 9-speaker Pioneer stereo, heated leather seats, push-button start and fog lamps. Standard safety items include stability control, antilock brakes, and a host of front, side, and knee airbags. Government crash test ratings have given the Cruze a 5-star rating for overall performance and for both front and side impact testing.

Starting suggested retail for the Camaro family begins at $24,100, including a $900 destination charge.

The Chevrolet Traverse is an eight-passenger utility vehicle that offers segment-leading storage capacity. At an EPA-rated 24 mpg highway, it is among the segment’s fuel economy leaders. Traverse also received a federal 5-Star overall vehicle score for safety and is an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety 2011 Top Safety Pick. Traverse is offered in LS, LT and LTZ models in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive. Suggested retail price starts at $30,240 including an $810 destination fee.
