2012 Sonic at Bob Maguire Chevrolet IIHS Top Safety Pick

The all-new 2012 Chevy Sonic, which has two more air bags than its subcompact competitors, is an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick.

The Sonic achieved “good” scores in all four types of tests performed, including frontal offset and side impact. It also has standard StabiliTrak electronic stability control, which the institute requires of all vehicles receiving a Top Safety Pick designation.

The IIHS tests vehicles to determine how well they protect occupants in front and side crash tests, in rollovers via a roof strength test, and in simulated rear impacts to evaluate seat and head restraints for protection against neck injuries.

“Only vehicles that perform with the highest level of safety in their class earn the Institute’s top accolade,” said IIHS President Adrian Lund.

In addition to 10 air bags, the Sonic offers a body structure incorporating a single welded side ring unit. More than 60 percent of the vehicle safety cage consists of high-strength steel.

“We developed Sonic to exceed our customers’ expectations of the subcompact market, both in the fun-to-drive performance characteristics and the segment-leading safety features,” said Joaquin Nuño-Whelan, Sonic vehicle line director and vehicle chief engineer. “This designation by IIHS confirms that Chevy customers can buy a subcompact with top safety performance.”

Other Sonic safety features include LATCH system (Lower Anchors and Top tethers for Children);six months of complimentary OnStar Directions and Connections service, including stolen vehicle assistance and automatic crash response, and power-assisted front disc and rear drum brakes with panic brake assist technology.

Sensors that control the deployment of 10 standard airbags are mounted into Sonic’s structure. The sensing and diagnostic module receives data from the car’s sensors and establishes the severity of the impact and whether to deploy the airbags. The additional driver and passenger knee airbags can help reduce injury to lower extremities.

Another standard feature is Sonic’s hill-hold technology, which makes navigating hilly terrain with a manual as effortless as automatic. It’s a luxury-level feature that helps drivers maintain braking control on hills.

With this rating, the Sonic joins the Chevrolet Volt and the Chevrolet Cruze, two other small cars that recently received a 2011 IIHS Top Safety Pick.

2012 Camaro ZL1 at Bob Maguire Chevrolet in Bordentown NJ

The 2012 Camaro ZL1 recently recorded a 7:41.27 lap at the Nurburgring. That is nearly 40 seconds quicker than a Camaro SS tested at the legendary German track in 2009. Measuring 12.9 miles (20.8 km) and including some 154 turns, the Nurburgring’s Nordschleife (“north loop”) is widely considered the world’s most-demanding course.

The Camaro ZL1 used for the lap was a production-intent model, with no performance modifications, driven by Camaro Performance Engineer Aaron Link. The Camaro ZL1 recorded its time of 7:41.27 from a flying start.

“The Nurburgring is unlike any track in the world,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “Each lap includes fast straights, sweeping off-camber turns, hairpin corners, and elevation changes. In order to do well on the ‘Ring, the car has to do everything well – including acceleration, braking, and lateral grip. Breaking an eight-minute lap in a 2+2 production car is a tremendous accomplishment, and validates that the Camaro ZL1 will truly be track-ready from the showroom.”

More than 30 percent of the Camaro SS was re-engineered for the Camaro ZL1, which arrives at U.S. dealerships in the first quarter of 2012.

The Camaro ZL1 features a supercharged 6.2L “LSA” engine SAE-rated at 580 horsepower (432 kW) and 556 lb.-ft. of torque (754 Nm) – making it the most-powerful production Camaro ever. Power is delivered to the rear wheels by either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

The ZL1’s power is complemented by exclusive performance technologies, including the third-generation of Magnetic Ride suspension and Performance Traction Management.

Additional track-ready features standard on the Camaro ZL1 include coolers for the engine, transmission and rear differential, cooling ducts for the Brembo brakes, and a high-performance fuel system delivers fuel to the LSA engine under any performance-driving condition.

“The ZL1’s full capability is evident at the Nurburgring,” said Link. “One of the best moments is coming through ‘Fuchsröhre’, or Foxhole. The ZL1 accelerates at an unbelievable rate down through the tunnel of trees, and into a sweeping left-hand corner flat out in fifth gear. You have to have an extremely well-mannered, confidence-inspiring car to take any corner at 160 mph without lifting off the throttle – and the ZL1 was just brilliant.”

2012 Sonic at Bob Maguire Chevrolet

Chevrolet has finally gotten the subcompact receipt right. With the intent of creating a world car to be sold in different countries across the globe, GM needed to prove that they could build a competitive product.

Fast forward to the fall of 2011 and watch as Chevrolet begins rolling out an all-new B-segment vehicle, the 2012 Sonic. Starting with a global architecture and the goal of designing and engineering a global vehicle, designers and engineers across the globe helped create a winning subcompact formula. We were blown away by how competent, competitive, comfortable, and most importantly, fun, the Sonic was.

The team behind the Chevy Sonic wanted to focus on what younger buyers would want. The current automotive market is chock-full of subcompacts that have standout features or achievements, but they all seem to have an identity crisis. There are so many options, packages, trim levels, editions, and suspension setups that trying to pick one can actually be more challenging than ever could have been imaginable.

Chevrolet made it clear that the millennials were their target, and they hit it better than anyone else with an eye-catching design, unique features, top safety equipment, and a vehicle that not only looks sporty, but acts it in each of their three trim levels, LS, LT, and LTZ.

2012 Sonic at Bob Maguire Chevrolet

On the topic of trim levels, three models of the Sonic are available; LS, LT, and LTZ. Propelling them is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder producing 138 horsepower and 125 lb-ft of torque; available on LT and LTZ is a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine producing the same horsepower but 148 lb-ft of torque at early RPM. A 5-speed manual is standard on 1.8L engines and a 6-speed automatic is available. The automatic combination is rated at 25 city, 35 highway mpg, with the manual doing 1 mpg better in the city cycle.

The sporty 1.4 turbo will only be available with a six-speed manual until later next year, and brings the Sonic to that golden 40 mpg highway number. The city cycle still benefits though and earns an impressive 29 mpg, and as you’d expect, both engines require 87-octane gasoline.

We found the 1.4 turbo engine to be quite a bit zippier around city driving, and especially at higher speeds when passing had to be done. The engine breathes quietly with the turbo barely noticeable; GM engineers did an excellent job controlling NVH for the passenger compartment. Part of this can be attributed to a well-tuned engine and the rest of the credit can be taken from extra sound deadening material used in the upcoming Buick Verano.

Sonic engineers including John Buttermore worked tirelessly in the tuning of the suspension and steering to ensure it responded in a manner that young drivers with an eagerness to push the limits expect. Coming from a history of passion for racing, Buttermore recently won the SCCA Touring 1 Class gold medal, and drove a lot of that passion into the development of the Sonic.

“The Sonic has excellent handling, steering, and allows the driver to get the most enjoyment and performance from their vehicle,” Buttermore said.

We found the Sonic‘s precise steering and lack of body roll a welcome change in this segment. The suspension setup isn’t anything unique, MacPherson front struts with a torsion beam in the back, but with a 99.4-inch wheelbase, it handled apex turns admirably and felt hunkered down in the corners.

The stick provides short throws, but the clutch pedal was a tad on the light side, with the friction point barely perceptible when it engages early on. We found the six-speed automatic to work well, quickly downshifting when more “oomph” was needed, but we noticed it sometimes hunted for the right gear during hilly city driving.

The Sonic comes to a stop with assurance, with good pedal resistance and little fade during our spirited driving runs. Chevrolet had to cut some costs somewhere, and we don’t mind the front disc, rear drum setup. It worked well in our various driving routes, and we especially enjoyed the Hill Hold Assist feature that comes standard on the Sonic so that gas-clutch modulation is no longer needed on inclines.

Inside, Chevrolet continues with the “dual-cockpit” design seen in the Cruze and Malibu. The interior of the Sonic is a place we enjoyed spending time in; it felt comfortable, roomy in the front and back, and the number of storage areas was unbelievable.

The first cool factor about the Sonic‘s interior is the gauge cluster. GM’s Kathy Servio talked about the inspiration coming from motorcycles, an analog tachometer and digital speedometer. Though we weren’t too fond of this setup in other vehicles where it is typically an afterthought, the Sonic’s speedometer was crystal clear, large, and simply put, it works.

The rest of the Sonic‘s interior is a mix of nicely finished plastics and fabrics. All switchgear felt solid and we especially liked the contrast stitching on LTZ trim levels.

Standard equipment includes a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, remote keyless entry, air conditioning, power windows and locks, a driver information center, and a stereo with auxillary input. Moving up to the LT adds a six-speaker system with satellite radio, rear floormats, better cloth seat material, and power heated mirrors.

Those aiming for the top of the line LTZ get leatherette heated seats, USB input, Bluetooth streaming audio and phone connectivity, cruise control, remote start, and 17″ wheels.

Sonic interiors are available in jet black and dark titanium trim with light stitching, jet black with brick trim and stitching, and a dark pewter with dark titanium trim and stylish blue stitching.

Gone are the days of “optional ABS on upper trim levels” as the Sonic offers all safety equipment standard. Most competitive vehicles meet today’s safety standards, but the Sonic surpasses them by meeting 2014 safety requirements.

The usual six airbags are in place, but the Sonic offers two additional airbags in the front for the driver and front passenger’s knees, as well as side thorax airbags for each of the rear outboard occupants.

All of the active safety systems are in place, including Anti-lock Brakes (ABS), Brake Assist (BAS), Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), and the aforementioned Hill-Hold Assist which continues applying brake pressure while on a hill, even after the driver releases his foot, for two seconds or until the throttle is applied.

In addition to offering all of the latest safety equipment, what truly gave the Sonic its 2011 IIHS Top Safety Pick Award is the strong Gamma platform that consists of 60% high strength steel.

The renowned OnStar system is also standard for six months.

With driving dynamics superior to its competitors, a useful and spacious interior, competitive fuel economy, and top safety and tech features, the 2012 Chevy Sonic is a clear winner in our books. The Sonic continues GM’s momentum of creating compelling vehicles that are one step ahead of the competition. Best of all, it’s the only subcompact built here, in GM’s Orion Township, Michigan facility and starts at a low $14,995.

The Chevrolet Camaro continues to be the best-selling sports car in the United States, and now is the most-popular vehicle on Facebook. The official Camaro page has 1.8 million fans – and counting – more than any other official vehicle page on the social media platform.

Nearly 60 percent of these fans are between the ages of 18 and 34, one illustration that the Camaro is introducing younger buyers to Chevrolet.

“The community that has grown around the Camaro is truly remarkable,” said Carolin Probst-Iyer, digital consumer engagement manager for Chevrolet. “With nearly 2 million fans, people are constantly posting new photos and content, which in turn inspires comments and engagement from other fans. As a result, the community provides an invaluable way for us to communicate directly with the most passionate Camaro enthusiasts and to understand what they like most about their favorite sports car.”

The passion and enthusiasm evident within the Facebook community has helped make the Camaro the best-selling sports car for the second year running.

Camaro passed the Ford Mustang in total sales in 2010, despite the Camaro being available only as a coupe until late fall. The arrival of the Camaro Convertible early this year helped extend that sales lead into 2011. From January through August, Camaro is on track to surpass Mustang sales by more than 10,000 vehicles.

Camaro growth – in total sales and in Facebook “likes” – is expected to continue with the introduction of the new Transformers Edition Camaro this fall, and the Camaro ZL1 in 2012. With more than 550 horsepower the supercharged ZL1 will be the most powerful and most capable Camaro ever produced.

“The fifth-generation Camaro has been inspiring fans from the moment it was introduced,” said John Fitzpatrick, Camaro marketing manager. “The new ‘Bumblebee’ and the new Camaro ZL1 will give Camaro enthusiasts even more reasons to talk about their favorite sports car.”

full-size trucks are used in such a wide range of situations-from construction fleets to long-distance driving-and the two different interiors offered in the Silverado and the nearly identical GMC Sierra help satisfy shoppers better than most other competing models. LS and LT models are probably the best fit for buyers who need the sturdy, get-messy capability of a pickup at least some of the time, but the LTZ is the choice for those who need a pickup that doesn’t compromise luxury. And for those who need a pickup but want to make a greener choice, with even lower operating costs, the Silverado Hybrid has 25% better fuel economy without sacrificing much towing or hauling ability.

Season of Doing at Bob Maguire Chevrolet in Bordentown, NJ

Overview

Chevrolet continues to offer two completely different interiors for its Silverado 1500 family of pickups: Work Truck, LS and LT trims get a so-called “pure pickup interior” that includes larger door handles and controls that are designed to be used with gloves on, while the LTZ trim gets the same luxurious, softer, and more carlike interior that’s used in the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban. The LTZ instrument panel is a bit lower to afford a better outward view, and several special color and trim themes are offered with the LTZ exclusively. LTZ models boast many more exclusive features in addition to the instrument panel; different door panels, a divided center console, heated power leather front seats, and an upgraded Bose sound system are included, while the top crew cab LTZ models get a rear-seat audio system, larger glovebox and rain-sensing wipers. In most Silverado 1500 models, a stadium-style back seat is split 60/40, including a folding center armrest, and can be folded forward easily. The extended-cab versions have enough legroom for occasional use and access is aided by 170-degree back doors. Regular cab, crew cab, and extended cab versions of the Silverado are available, while cargo bed lengths are 5′ 8″ for the short bed, 6′ 6″ for the standard bed, or 8 feet for the long bed. The maximum payload rating runs as high as 1,909 pounds. Across most of the model line, the Silverado has a very good ride and handles well compared to the full-size trucks of the past, with a well-tuned coil-over-shock front suspension, Hotchkiss-type rear suspension and rack-and-pinion steering. Actually, five different suspension packages are offered, each tuned for particular types of use: Z83 is for a smooth ride; Z85 is oriented for better handling and trailer towing; Z71 yields better off-road capability; Z60 is for top street performance; and NHT is for top towing capacity. Towing numbers range up to 10,700 pounds when configured with the extended cab, 6.0-liter engine and Enhanced Trailering Package. The 2011 Silverado offers four different engines-a 195-horsepower, 4.3-liter V6, a 302-hp, 4.8-liter V8, a 315-hp, 5.3-liter V8 and a 403-hp, 6.2-liter V8. The V6 comes with a 4-speed automatic, while all others get a 6-speed automatic.

Fuel economy ratings are as high was 22 mpg on the highway. The Silverado Hybrid is a good option for green shoppers who still need pickup capability. The 2-mode hybrid system incorporates a 6.0-liter gasoline V8, electric motor system, variable automatic transmission and nickel-metal hydride battery pack, all of which enable a 6,100-pound tow rating while allowing especially good fuel economy in city driving, with EPA ratings of 21 mpg city, 22 highway. Top options on the Silverado include Bluetooth phone connectivity, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system and a navigation system with XM Nav Traffic, plus a rearview camera system that aids visibility while parking this tall vehicle.

Advanced Tire Saves Big Bucks for Bordentown, NJ Chevy Cruze Drivers

With gas prices near $4.00 a gallon,  drivers are looking to boost the fuel economy of their car. Bordentown consumers need to look no further than the Chevrolet Cruze Eco compact car, available at Bob Maguire Chevrolet.

The tire development engineers at General Motors worked with tire manufacturers to produce an industry benchmark tire that boosts fuel efficiency by three miles per gallon on the Chevy Cruze Eco. That’s about 38 extra miles on a tank of fuel and a savings of about $112 per year for the average driver.

“Our Chevy Cruze customers are continuously impressed by the technologies on the Cruze Eco that help to improve fuel economy without sacrificing safety or performance,” said Michael Maguire of Bob Maguire Chevrolet. “The tires available on the Cruze Eco are unlike anything on the competition and use high-tech polymers that create a high-MPG set of tires.”

So what makes the tire unique? Typically, improving one facet of tire performance like rolling resistance requires sacrifices in other areas like traction in snow and stopping distance. Not so with the leading-edge Cruze Eco tires.

The tires represent one of many fuel-saving technologies that help the Cruze Eco average 42 miles per gallon on the highway. With a starting suggested price of $19,995, Cruze Eco offers hybrid-like fuel economy without the premium price tag. Other innovations that make the Cruze an MPG standout include an air shutter system that morphs the aerodynamic profile of the vehicle to optimize fuel efficiency and energy-efficient rack-mounted electric power steering.
