General Motors unveiled the Chevrolet Cruze ECO at New York Auto Show. The Chevrolet Cruze ECO is a high-efficiency model which is powered by a 1.4-liter Ecotec turbocharged engine equipped with variable valve timing that’s coupled with a six-speed manual transmission. A six-speed automatic will also be offered as an option. The company estimates the Chevrolet Cruze ECO will give a 40 mpg fuel consumption on the highway.
The Chevrolet Cruze ECO comes with a lower front grille air shutter that closes at high speeds to improve aerodynamics and a lower front air dam extension. The Chevrolet Cruze ECO also features a lowered ride height, 17-inch lightweight aluminum wheels and ultra-low rolling resistance 17-inch Goodyear tires.
The Eco achieves greater fuel economy using a number of features that enhance its aerodynamics, minimize weight and reduce rolling resistance. The Chevrolet says the Cruze ECO will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 10 seconds with the manual gearbox and in 0 to 60mph in just 9 seconds with the automatic gearbox.
Also debuting in New York will be a sporty variant of the Cruze, the RS model, which is essentially a styling package. It will be available on the upscale Cruze LT and LTZ trim levels. It features special bumpers, side skirt, a rear spoiler and an instrument cluster with chrome accent rings.
The Chevrolet Cruze ECO price and availability will be announced at a later date and the Cruze Eco will be available in the fourth quarter of 2010.

The Aveo RS strongly hints at the 2012 Aveo that GM is prepping for battle against the sharp new Ford Fiesta in the increasingly competitive subcompact market. “Our intent with the Aveo RS show car is to demonstrate Chevrolet’s vision and design potential for a small car we think customers will love,” said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet general manager.
General Motors didn’t specifically say what the suffix stands for, and though we know it means “Rally Sport” when talking about, say Camaros, this is an Aveo. It’s gotta mean “Really Small.” In any case, the RS is longer, wider and more spacious than the current Aveo. It ditches the bland forget-it-as-soon-as-you’ve-seen-it styling for sharp lines, deep creases and an aggressive stance. It rides on 19-inch wheels, sports a dual exhaust and wears a big spoiler. About hundreds of cars on display this week at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit none has more riding on it than the little Ford Focus. Redesigned for the 2012 model year, it’s the flagship of Ford Motor’s new small-car lineup in the U.S. and a crucial test of Chief Executive Alan R. Mulally’s strategy to develop vehicles that will sell in every market of the world.
Along with the recently introduced Ford Fiesta subcompact, and a new portfolio of small cars from General Motors, the Focus is also a test of whether American carmakers can finally build great small cars profitably. Ford got an early lift Monday as its Fusion Hybrid sedan was named car of the year and its versatile Transit Connect compact van snagged truck of the year at the Detroit auto show.
Four new cars in particular–the Focus, Fiesta, Chevrolet Cruze and Chevrolet Aveo–“will spell the future profitability of the American industry,” predicts IHS Global Insight analyst John Wolkonowicz. “They are premium small cars. As the market is downsizing to comply with new fuel-economy rules, it’s going to be necessary for the car companies.
Both GM and Ford say they’ll make money on small cars by selling them in huge volumes around the world. Likewise, GM’s small-car strategy is built around global volume. The Cruze, introduced last month, is already a hot seller in Europe, Asia and Australia. GM says it offers midsize interior space in a compact car, and its new Ecotec 1.4-liter turbocharged engine will get 40 miles per gallon. U.S. sales begin this fall.
GM’s aggressively styled Chevy Aveo RS concept argues that the days of the bare-bones econo-box are gone. The Aveo show car strongly hints at what the next-generation Aveo will look like: a huge, open-mouthed grille, wide stance and low roofline. The small cars on display in Detroit represent a critical battleground for U.S. automakers around the world.
But the most significant hybrid introduction might be Toyota’s concept, smaller than the popular Toyota Prius hybrid, and signaling the Japanese automaker’s intention to roll out a full family of Prius hybrid vehicles. The Prius has become a universal icon for hybrid technology, Toyota said it will begin marketing Prius as a brand.
Chevrolet, as noted, is focused on small, fuel-efficient cars and crossovers, with Cruze and Aveo taking center stage alongside the hot-selling Equinox crossover. Buick continues its rebuilding effort with the sporty new Regal mid-sized sedan. GM hopes it will attract younger buyers to the struggling brand, as the Buick Enclave crossover and Lacrosse sedan have done. GMC is also going for younger professional buyers with its Granite “urban utility” concept vehicle.
Cadillac’s big news is the XTS Platinum concept, a top-of-the-line Caddy that will replace the STS and DTS sedans. It will compete with luxury standard-bearers like the Mercedes S-class and BMW 7-series.

The fire sale initiated for Saturn and Pontiac cars for the December sales, has aroused the curiosity of many, this has been stated by two Pontiac dealers on Wednesday. General Motors has announced $7000 rebate on every Pontiac or Saturn Manufactured car that moves for rental or service fleet. Some dealers are not entirely sure that this is a good deal. The idea is to increase the sales by inducing buyers with lower rates. This decision to suddenly hike up the sales of Pontiac and Saturn cars has been made since General Motors has decided to bring an end to their nameplate, despite a major amount of restructuring done this year. General Motors deal with Penske Automobile Group regarding the sale of Saturn nameplate has also fallen through.
The factory rebate for Pontiac’s new models has already reached $6500, according to Fred Ferrara, General sales manager of Fairborn Buick Pontiac, GMC. He has also stated that the rebate will only apply if the cars are moved into the rental or service fleets for thirty days or thirty thousand miles. There are chances of making higher savings regarding taxes with brand new cars as compared to used cars. This has led to consumers invest in a new car instead for tax savings. Ferrara currently has only one Pontiac G6 coupe left on his lot. The remaining model will also sell in a short period of time. Buicks and GMC cars have also now picked up on the sales. Owner of Reichard Buick Pontiac GMC in Dayton, Gene Reichard claims that this fire sale has generated a lot of interest since it is a good offer. In two months, Reichard has sold 130 cars of Pontiac make. Buyers are not availing $6500 factory rebate, but also an additional $7000 rebate as well.

According to Wall Street Journal, General Motors is trying to dump the leftover stock from Pontiac and Saturn manufacturers in the market in order to increase the December sales of the particular car manufacturing brands. Wall Street Journal has also states that, General Motors has sent letter to its dealers stating that they are ready to pay $7000, every time a car manufactured by Saturn or Pontiac’s possession is transferred from their stock to that of rental-vehicle or service vehicle. These cars would be sold on second hand basis since these dealers are considered as owners of the car, hence the discounts availed on these cars will be high. This offer is going to last until the 4th of January since it is the last day for the General Motor Company to hike up their December car sales. General Motors will be booking the sales as fleet deliveries General Motors is planning to quit on Pontiac and Saturn and focus its attention on Hummers instead. General Motors’s contract to sell Saturn’s cars had collapsed in September, since then it has also pulled out of the contract to sell Opel by its European Unit. Currently its consignment of Hummers to a Chinese firm has been deferred and their deal with Saab cars is on a closure. This information has been provided by Reuters, but they were unable to get a comment from General Motors since it was past the US business hours.
General Motors, automobile maker has decided to launch a new Chevrolet accessory that will convert cars into a hot-spot for Wi-Fi. This device will be called a Chevrolet Wi-Fi and the service will be provided by Autonet Mobile. The device is given on dealership basis and it will be installed in a dock inside the car, which is compatible to empower a 3G mobile Wi-Fi router that can interchanged between various vehicles. This device can be installed in Chevrolet’s Equinox, Traverse, Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, Avalanche and Express cars. General Motors state that Chevrolet’s Wi-Fi can download at a speed of 1.5 mbps. It can be used by several people at one go. The Wi-Fi can be accessed by not only people sitting inside the car, but also those who are at a distance of 150 feet. Towards the end of 2009 the device will cost $199, but after a mail in rebate of $200 had been sent a two years service agreement has been signed. The service costs are $29 and $59 for downloading data up to 1GB and 5GB, respectively, on a monthly basis.
