For 2013, the Nissan GT-R gets another power boost from its twin-turbo V6 engine; this year it’s up to 545 horsepower, up from 530 last year and 485 the year before, due to increased intake efficiency, better airflow to the intercooler, and improved exhaust efficiency. Additionally, the transmission has been refined and the suspension retuned. Inside, front seat support and comfort are much improved.
Some might know the Nissan GT-R more from racing video games than from the street. The GT-R is a true exotic supercar–it’s a legend because of its rarity, exotic powertrain, and incredible performance numbers. While the GT-R might not make a practical daily driver, this high-performance coupe is a must-have for collectors, the image-conscious, and those who must have what’s fastest.
The Nissan GT-R is offered in Premium and Black Edition models, both powered by a special 3.8L twin-turbocharged V6, now making 545 horsepower and 463 pound-feet of torque. Power is put to all four wheels with a performance-oriented all-wheel drive system, and a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox (with no actual clutch pedal) handles the shifting. With the GT-R’s additional power, the dash to 60 mph takes around three seconds, and top speed is a claimed 196 mph. Brakes are strong enough for secure stops from well into triple-digit speeds, and handling is enhanced by the variable-power-split AWD system. The ride is stiff, in a nod to this car’s prioritization of performance above all else. Inside, the GT-R feels snug, with a strong cockpit design. The driver sits low in rather narrow, well-bolstered sport seats, with a wide center console alongside. Steering wheel paddle shifters can command quick shifts, while center-stack controls are canted slightly toward the driver. The GT-R has a very extensive list of features. Heated, leather-suede-trimmed seats, full power accessories, an Intelligent Key entry and ignition system, a navigation system with XM NavTraffic and NavWeather, a universal garage-door opener and Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity are all included. Also included is a Bose sound system with nine speakers, two subwoofers, Bluetooth streaming audio and DVD playback capability, USB and iPod connectivity and XM satellite radio. Priced about $10,000 above the $96,820 GT-R Premium, the Black Edition adds metallic black lightweight forged aluminum wheels, designed by RAYS, plus Recaro sport bucket seats and unique red and black interior trim. There are few major options on the GT-R. A Cold Weather Package adds Dunlop run-flat tires and smoke-gray forged aluminum wheels. A backup camera is also available.

The Chevrolet Camaro continues to be the best-selling sports car in the United States, and now is the most-popular vehicle on Facebook. The official Camaro page has 1.8 million fans – and counting – more than any other official vehicle page on the social media platform.
Nearly 60 percent of these fans are between the ages of 18 and 34, one illustration that the Camaro is introducing younger buyers to Chevrolet.
“The community that has grown around the Camaro is truly remarkable,” said Carolin Probst-Iyer, digital consumer engagement manager for Chevrolet. “With nearly 2 million fans, people are constantly posting new photos and content, which in turn inspires comments and engagement from other fans. As a result, the community provides an invaluable way for us to communicate directly with the most passionate Camaro enthusiasts and to understand what they like most about their favorite sports car.”
Camaro passed the Ford Mustang in total sales in 2010, despite the Camaro being available only as a coupe until late fall. The arrival of the Camaro Convertible early this year helped extend that sales lead into 2011. From January through August, Camaro is on track to surpass Mustang sales by more than 10,000 vehicles.
Camaro growth – in total sales and in Facebook “likes” – is expected to continue with the introduction of the new Transformers Edition Camaro this fall, and the Camaro ZL1 in 2012. With more than 550 horsepower the supercharged ZL1 will be the most powerful and most capable Camaro ever produced.
“The fifth-generation Camaro has been inspiring fans from the moment it was introduced,” said John Fitzpatrick, Camaro marketing manager. “The new ‘Bumblebee’ and the new Camaro ZL1 will give Camaro enthusiasts even more reasons to talk about their favorite sports car.”
The Corvette comes with no less than 430 hp, even in base trim. Corvettes will never be mistaken for economy cars, but it does get a surprising 26 mpg on the highway with the 6-speed manual transmission. The ‘Vette’s value comes in its racing-derived engine and handling, its sexy curves, and grins per mile. All this comes at an entry price of just under $50,000.
With the addition of the Grand Sport model this year, there are several Corvettes to choose from. The Corvette coupe and convertible have a 6.2-liter, 430-hp V8 engine, known as the LS3, and a standard 6-speed manual transmission, though a 6-speed paddle-shift automatic is an option. The paddle shifter has been revised to include a “push and hold” function to make it easier to transition back to automatic after you’ve had your fun through the chicanes.
The sport-tuned Z06 has the larger LS7 engine, a 7-liter powerplant that makes 505 hp and is connected to a 6-speed manual only. This combination is capable of 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds — in first gear. The body is lightened by using an aluminum structure with bonded carbon fiber composites. It features a firmer suspension; red, 6-piston brake calipers; and 18-inch front and 19-inch rear aluminum wheels.
The ZR1 turns up the heat with the LS9 6.2-liter engine and Tremec 6-speed manual transmission, plus a new Performance Traction Management system for improved on-track performance. With 638 hp and 604 lb-ft of torque, the ZR1’s top speed has been tested at over 200 mph, making it the fastest production Corvette ever. It’s built on the same chassis as the Z06, but with a specially tuned suspension and Michelin performance tires exclusive to the ZR1.
The new Grand Sport coupe and convertible share the LS3 engine with the base model coupe and convertible, and it can be had with a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. As a replacement for the previous Z51 performance package, the Grand Sport comes standard with wider wheels and tires, a revised suspension, extra cooling, larger brakes and specific manual gear ratios.
All Corvettes come with standard air conditioning, keyless entry, a stereo system with MP3 playback, cruise control, power everything, dual-zone climate control, leather seating and steering-wheel mounted audio controls. Chevrolet provides its flagship sports car with plenty of standard safety features, too, like ABS, driver and passenger air bags, TPMS, traction control, and a limited-slip differential.
The Corvette is a purpose-built driving vehicle, and as such, Chevrolet doesn’t offer a wide array of optional equipment. Packages include heated seats, a Bose sound system, a navigation system and Bluetooth. A custom leather-wrapped interior package adds 2-tone leather with crossed flags embroidered in the headrests and leather on the console, instrument panel, and door panels. And you can prove you live in the twenty-first century with the available dot-matrix head-up display that shows speed, rpm, oil pressure and g-meter readings.
